Biography:
Richard W. DePrato is a Junior Research Assistant with the Institute for Policy Research. He joined the Institute in 1991 as a part-time field interviewer and moved into field supervision and management responsibilities the following year. His current responsibilities with the Institute for Policy Research involve assisting research staff with all aspects (at all levels) of the data management process. He also assists with Human Resources and Business Operations.

His current research responsibilities include assisting with questionnaire construction and testing, coding of open-end survey responses and development of response codebooks, assistance with sample management, editing of data tables, charts, reports and project report materials, data frequencies and open-end responses, and assistance with CATI programming, with the utilization of both CATI and CI3 software.

Coupled with his data management responsibilities, he is also well versed in interviewing techniques and communicating with respondents from both the public and private sector.

He has been involved with the process of conducting interviews and data collection since 1991 and has remained part of the IPR Field Operations since joining the organization, resulting in more than a decade of involvement with conducting phone and face-to-face interviews, assisting with Focus Group facilitation, and training of Field staff in all facets of the interviewing process, including avoidance of non-response, vocal presentation, and response “probing” techniques.

Current Human Resources and Business Operations assistance responsibilities include processing of new departmental hires, assistance with account allocation and payroll allocation, maintenance of employee documentation and personnel information, record-keeping responsibilities relating to the storage of personnel materials, along with asset management and inventory responsibilities. He has experience with SAP, Kronos time-keeping and PeopleAdmin Human Resources software.

He received his B.A. in Political Science, with a minor in History, from the University of Cincinnati and received his M.A. from the University of Notre Dame with the primary focus of his research being the influence of Phenomenology, Hermeneutics, Structuralism and post-Structuralism, and Existentialism upon contemporary Political theory/philosophy and Political Theology. Additional research interests include Mass Political/Social Movements, Political Psychology and Political Socialization, and Collective Behavior.
